Los Nevados National Park, located in the Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes Mountains is one of Colombia´s best destinations for hikers. Expect amazing views, stunning mountain scenery and a unique ecosystem, the Paramo, composed of huge grasses and high-altitude plants. This trekking adventure covers the central section of Los Nevados National Park, one of its most beautiful parts. The trail elapses four states: Tolima, Quindío, Risaralda and Caldas, and takes you over high mountain passes. A highlight is the climb/hike of the stunning Paramillo del Quindío summit (4745m / 15567 ft), the highest summit in that state, located right in the middle of the National Park. The Paramillo has one of the best 360º panoramic views, overlooking the three major snow capped volcanoes: Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado del Tolima and Nevado del Santa Isabel. The trip concludes with a visit to Cocora Valley, where the world's largest palm grows and Salento, a beautiful colonial village where you will be able to learn about coffee production and taste Colombia's best coffee.

  • Pick-up and transfer along the margins of the Otun River until the trailhead known as “El Cedral”
  • Follow a very nice trail with a moderate ascent rate towards the “La Pastora” refuge, where you spend the night camping
  • Enjoy the scenery of the campsite, located in the cloud rain forest or explore the beautiful surroundings
  • The first part of today’s trail will take you to “El Jordan” farm, located at an idyllic place between volcanic hills, covered with dense vegetation and decorated with waterfalls of crystal clear water
  • From here, the vegetation starts to change into páramo and the forest starts to open up
  • Continue on a steep section, following a long traversing trail until the ridge of the El Agrado valley, which will lead to the next farm “Berlin”, our home for the night, located in a seldom visited area and one of the most beautiful places in the park
  • Today’s climb is the most challenging part of the program and a very early start is necessary
  • Ascend “El Agrado” River valley up to the mountain pass called “La Angustia”, the border between the states of Risaralda and Quindío, gently descend to the Quebrada Cardenas’ valley, followed by a short re ascent, on the northern flank of the valley, to the beautiful “humedales” wetland area, the place where Rio Quindío is born, and where much of the water provided to the lower regions comes from
  • From there climb the extinct Volcano of El Paramillo del Quindío, the highest summit in the Quindío state
  • The ascent is quite demanding due to the steepness of the terrain and the altitude and most of the trail is over slippery scree that goes in an almost direct line up to the ridge called “El Caballete”, from where the climb follows a very spectacular red colored sand ridge up the main summit
  • Your effort is honored with one of the best views in the park – El Paramillo is located almost in the center of the park with a 360º panoramic view and on clear days it is possible to see all three main summits: to the north Nevado Santa Isabel and Nevado del Ruiz and to the south Nevado del Tolima
  • Descent back to your campsite on the same trail
  • Your last day in the mountains leads you to Cocora Valley, home of the endemic Colombian Wax Palm, the world’s tallest palm and Colombia’s national tree
  • Once you finalized your trek, transfer to the lovely town of Salento, by the traditional Willies jeeps that are a symbol of the coffee area>’s coffee culture
  • The evening is at leisure to stroll around the colonial town, enjoy dinner and try some of Colombia’s best coffee!
  • Enjoy a relaxing morning and rest from the last day’s efforts
  • In the afternoon, join a coffee tour to learn how coffee is produced and processed, as well as how to make really good Espresso
  • Active travelers can book an optional extra tour and spend their last day in the region doing a horseback ride or go mountain biking
  • Pick up at the hotel and transfer to Armenia’s airport
