TRIP ITINERARY

A self-drive holiday is one of the best ways to explore Costa. You are totally flexible to take detours or stop spontaneously to take photos, buy souvenirs or go out to eat. Costa Rica is a safe country and the majority of the main roads are in a good condition. To make sure you start your trip well prepared you will receive a detailed travel kit with emergency phone numbers, maps and an itinerary description and your car will be equipped with a TRIO device (GPS, internet hotspot and mobile phone) to make sure you don't get lost. This trip takes you to Costa Rica's main highlights: Tortuguero, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio NP and Caribbean beaches. During two weeks you will have the chance to observe numerous wildlife, see two volcanoes, hike to an impressive waterfall, explore the treetops of the cloud forest on suspension bridges and relax at the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean and Pacific coast.

DAY 1: WELCOME TO COSTA RICA!
  • Reception at Juan Santamaría Airport, to receive your Travel kit and transfer to your hotel in San José
  • Enjoy the rest of the day to settle in and relax or explore the surroundings of your hotel
DAY 2: IRAZÚ VOLCANO – OROSÍ – LANKESTER GARDEN
  • Today you will take a day tour to Irazú Volcano Summit, the highest Volcano in Costa Rica – on clear days it is possible to see both the Caribbean and the Pacific coast from its top
  • After visiting the volcano the trip takes you to Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica, and the beautiful Lankester Gardens, a place with more than 800 different varieties of orchids and tropical plants
  • Enjoy lunch in a beautiful restaurant overlooking the coffee plantations of the Orosi Valley, famous for its rich soil, abundant plant life and coffee plantations, before heading back to San José
DAY 3: TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK
  • In the morning transfer to Guapiles, and after a traditional breakfast further to Pavona, where you continue the trip to your lodge by boat
  • During the boat trip trip, you will have the opportunity to spot herons, seabirds, howler monkeys, iguanas, water turtles and, with a little luck, even an anteater
  • In the afternoon join a guided boat tour to spot some more of Costa Rica’s amazing wildlife and learn about its flora and fauna
  • In case you are visitin the area between July and October, you can book an optional night to see sea turtles at the beach – a truly unique experience
DAY 4: BOAT TOUR & HIKE IN THE RAINFOREST
  • Today you will explore the tropical rainforest during a hike on the lodge’s private trail
  • Spot monkeys, slots or toucans, to just name a few of the animals seen here frequently
  • Return to your lodge for lunch and visit the small town of Tortuguero in the afternoon
DAY 5: PUERTO VIEJO AT THE CARIBBEAN
  • After breakfast take the boat back to Pavona and from there the bus to Guapiles where you will enjoy a hearty lunch
  • Meet up with a representative from the car rental company who will hand you over the car and then head towards you next stop: Puerto Viejo, a laid back beach town
  • After a relaxing day at the beach, get yourself prepared for a typical night and enjoy the sound of Reggae with a delicious fruit cocktail
DAY 6: FREE TIME IN PUERTO VIEJO
  • Puerto Viejo is well known for its beautiful beaches, some of them among the most spectacular in Costa Rica: Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra and Punta Uva
  • You will have your day at leisure to visit Manzanillo and its nature trails, surrounded by tropical forest and the Caribbean sea or alternatively take some surfing lessons, do a horseback ride on the beach or visit the Kekoldi indigenous tribe
DAY 7: ARENAL VOLCANO & HOT SPRINGS
  • Continue to La Fortuna, the village located on the foot of the world-famous Arenal Volcano and one of Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attractions
  • During the next days you have plenty of time to discover the Arenal area and Arenal Volcano and spot many wild animals
  • In the evening, relax in the hotel’s hot springs
DAY 8: TENORIO VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK / RIO CELESTE
  • Today you will visit the national park and the River Celeste waterfall with its impressive and extraordinary colors
  • The hike through the Tenorio Volcano National Park takes you to the Celeste River’s lagoon, the famous spot where, mysteriously, the crystal-clear water changes to shiny, light-blue water and into the jungle to a warmer area, where you will see, feel and smell sulfuric steam and fumaroles
  • At the end of a steep stair trail you will reach the Celeste River waterfall with its impressive and extraordinary colors
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch before heading back to your hotel to rest
DAY 9: DRIVING TO MONTEVERDE
  • Continue to your next destination, the town of Santa Elena, located in the Cloud Forest Region Monteverde, a paradise for outdoor enthusiast, nature lovers, bird watcher and adventurers
  • In the afternoon you have time to visit the village St. Elena – we especially recommend to try the lunch in the Tree House Restaurant or take a tour through the Monteverde Frog Pond and Butterfly Garden
  • Alternatively you can take a walk through the private reserve of your hotel and end the day with a coffee on the terrace of your hotel
DAY 10: SUSPENSION BRIDGES AND THE CLOUDFOREST
  • Today you will explore the cloud forest and have a “walk over the clouds “ on an amazing trail made up of suspension bridges of different lengths and heights
  • Spot various inhabitants of the forest and maybe, with a little bit of luck, even the Quetzal, famous for its majestic coloring and long feathered tails and considered the most beautiful bird on earth
DAY 11: MANUEL ANTONIO
  • After breakfast drive towards Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast and the Manuel Antonio area
  • We recommend you to visit visit the public beach, enjoy dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants, watch the sunset or simply relax at your hotel’s pool
DAY 12: MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK
  • Today you will explore the pristine natural beauty of Manuel Antonio, a park filled with exotic wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, birds, reptiles and butterflies
  • Your knowledgeable guide will set his trained eye to point out the park’s wildlife and answer your questions about the parks’s flora and fauna and will be equipped with Pentax and Swarovski telescopes to make your images in your memories and photographs even crisper
  • Spend some time at Manuel Antonio’s beaches which have been named the most beautiful of the world by Forbes magazine
DAY 13: BACK TO SAN JOSÉ
  • Morning at leisure so you can dip one last time in the Pacific or suntan by your hotel’s pool before heading back to San José
  • Drop off your car and enjoy your last evening in Costa Rica
DAY 14: GOODBYE AND HASTA PRONTO!
  • Enjoy your last delicious breakfast with a good Costa Rican coffee before taking the transfer to the airport for your flight back home
