TRIP ITINERARY

The Pueblos Mancomunados are a group of of eight Zapotec indigenous villages in the Northern Sierra, located in Mexico’s Oaxaca state. In 1994 these mountain villages came together to create a unique community-based tourism project and a well established network of over 100 kilometers (62 miles) of hiking trails. On this 7-day trek, you will hike on ancient trails into the very heart of the Mancomun territory. Trek through a varied ecosystems and privileged natural environment, visiting a different community every day and immerse into the history, culture, and traditions of the local Mancomunados communities. The trails have different degrees of difficulty and duration and the daily walking distances is between 8 and 16 kilometers (5 to 10 miles), so a good physical condition is required to enjoy this trip.

DAY 1: LLANO GRANDE “THE CLOUDS PARADISE”
  • Arrival to the community of Llano Grande, one of the smallest towns in Pueblos Mancomunados and one of the cleanest communities in the country
  • Hike on the “La Sepultura” trail trough a mixed forest with a high variation of vegetation
  • After enjoying a typical lunch participate in a bread preparation workshop
DAY 2: CUAJIMOLOYAS “MUSHROOM LAND”
  • Early morning drive to one of the highest points in the area, where you can appreciate one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world
  • Hike from Llano Grande to Cuajimoloyas along wonderful forests, pine trees and typical medicinal plants
  • Learn about traditional medicine
DAY 3: BENITO JUÁREZ “YOUR SECOND HOME”
  • Continue your expedition through a rural path used by the peasants to reach their labor camps
  • Enjoy a delicious meal “from the field to the table” at a local farm
  • Visit the Benito Juárez viewpoint with its impressive view of the central valleys and a suspension bridge
DAY 4: LA NEVERÍA “LATZI BELLI”
  • Hike to the town of Nevería, the youngest and smallest community of the group, which owes its name to the activity carried out by its first settlers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century
  • Participate in gastronomy workshop led by a local family
DAY 5: LATUVI “ROLLED LEAF”
  • Hike along a quiet trail that leads you from the cold pine forests of the Nevería to the oak forests of lower altitudes in Latuvia
  • Try a Temazcal, a traditional Mexican steam bath
DAY 6: LACHATAO/AMATLÁN
  • Trek on one of the most impressive trails of the trip, an ancient route which used to link the Zapotec cities of the Central Valleys with the Gulf of Mexico on which you still find traces of the original stone trail in an excellent condition
  • Walk to the bank of a river, cross a canyon and appreciate the wonderful biological diversity of the Sierra Norte
  • Learn about the pulque and tepache making process
DAY 7: VESTIGES
  • Finish your trip with a tour in the community of Amatlán
  • After lunch return to Oaxaca city
