TRIP ITINERARY

Stay at one of the most remote lodges in South America and experience Peru´s Amazon Rainforest in depth on this amazing Amazon Wildlife Tour at the Tambopata Research Center! A rule in the Amazon states that the further away from the cities you go and the longer you stay in the forest, the better chances you will have to observe wildlife and wildlife enthusiasts will hardly find a better place to stay at. This place is known for its ongoing research of macaws for more than 20 years, features the largest macaw clay lick in the world and visitors will have the chance to spot an amazing variety of wildlife, including several species of parrots and other birds, squirrel, monkeys, frogs, several mammals and with some luck even the jaguar! The below itinerary is a sample itinerary of 4 days, shorter and longer options are available either.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE
  • Transfer by vehicle and boat towards a lodge where you will spend the first night
  • Hike out at night, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see and find frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories
DAY 2: TAMBOPATA´S WILDLIFE
  • Continue your journey by boat into the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, leaving the final traces of human habitation behind
  • Stop at the Chuncho claylick which probably attracts more large macaws than any other claylick in the world and enjoy the amazing spectacle of dozens of macaws taking flight
  • Hike on a short trail that is regenerating on old bamboo forest and spot Howler and Dusky Titi Monkeys
  • Get an in depth look at the biology of macaws during a lecture held by scientists
  • Enjoy your first night in the Tambopata Research Center
DAY 3: MACAWS, PARRTOS & MONKEYS
  • Get up early to visit the large river bank of Macaw Clay Lick and spot Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots on in a raucous and colorful spectacle
  • Look for Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries on an walk through the floodplain forests
  • Spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sunbittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets on a tiny pond with a platform in the middle located close to the lodge
DAY 4: DEPARTURE
  • Take your river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado
