Ausangate Mountain

Hike in the shadow of the snow-capped Ausangate mountain, the highest peak in the Cusco area and considered a holy mountain by local Peruvians. Enjoy breathtaking views past snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes and glacial peaks.

Rainbow Mountain

Trek to the the incredible multi-colored Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountains early in the morning arriving before day visitors. Capture the most beautiful photos while you have the place only for you and a couple of other travelers.

Off the Beaten Path Trek

Join a true off the beaten path wilderness trek on a new route located in the high Andes. Along your journey you will see turquoise lakes, glacial mountains, llamas, alpacas, chinchillas, and maybe even a wild vicuña.

Premium Camping

A dedicated support team will make sure you will feel most comfortable, set up tents before you arrive at each campsite, prepare delicious fresh meals and provide you with hot water bottles and thick blankets to keep you warm at night.

TRIP ITINERARY

Join a true off the beaten path wilderness hike in the high Andes above the tree line with breathtaking views past snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, glacial peaks, in the shadow of the highest mountain in the Cuzco Region, Ausangate. The trek ends with a morning hike to the the incredibly colorful Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountains composed of stratified layers of sandstone. These fine grained rock layers contain large amounts of iron and other minerals which give the mountains the pigments for the various colored stripes. This trek is moderate-strenuous due to long mileage each day (32.3 miles total), high altitude hiking and camping (highest pass is 17,060 ft), and steep ascents.

DAY 1: CUSCO – TINKI VILLAGE – UPIS
  • Transfer to Tinqui, a village on the high plains “altiplano” and the starting point of the trek
  • Hike on a gently ascending path enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding snow capped mountains and Ausangate Glacier
  • Encounter traditional houses, local people dressed in their colorful, traditional clothing and grazing llamas and alpacas along the way
  • Camp at Upis Hot Springs and enjoy a refreshing soak at the end of the day
DAY 2: UPIS – ARAPA PASS – PUCACCOCHA
  • Hike close to the Ausangate glacier peak and enjoy incredible views of this mountain as well as beautiful lakes and waterfalls
  • See llamas, alpacas and wild vicuñas (the undomesticated ancestor of the alpaca) and perhaps a rare condor soaring above.
  • Camp at Puca Ccocha (Red Lake), one of the most beautiful campsites located at the skirt of the Ausangate peak and at the bank of the lake
DAY 3: PUCACCOCHA – PUCA PASS – CHILLCA VALLEY – ANANTAPATA
  • Start one of the most beautiful days of the trek, enjoying majestic views of some of the highest peaks in the Andes and depths of the beautiful valleys
  • Climb to the Puca Pass with gorgeous views of turquoise lakes and the Ausangate glacier along the way
  • See the beginning of the Rainbow Mountain range with their striated colors and continue on to the Anantapata campsite
DAY 4: ANANTAPATA – YANACOCHA – RAINBOW MOUNTAINS – CHILLCA VILLAGE – CUSCO
  • Reach the highest pass of the trek, the Warmisaya (previously known as Pitumarca)
  • Reach one of the most stunning places in South America and one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Peru, the famous Rainbow Mountains and the Red Mountain Valley
  • Walk to the best spots to get the perfect postcard pictures of these incredible mountains and the other surrounding peaks
  • Drive back to Cusco and your hotel to freshen up and relax before a celebratory group dinner
